SUMMER JEWELLERY TREND: DIY SEASHELLS EARRINGS

All you world travellers are in luck, because the unexpected trend this summer is seashells, and I don’t know about you, but I always manage to find a few unique seashells on the shores of my beach destinations and can’t resist bringing them home. So now’s your chance to gemify those shells and wear them with pride! I’m going to show you how.

When I was six years old, I used to love collecting seashells. I’d spend hours on the beach, choosing the perfect shells to make necklaces and bracelets for my mermaid fantasy! It is one of my earliest jewellery memories.

Seashells are lucky charms for travellers, which makes this current trend all the more exciting. From costume and fashion jewellery to fine jewellery, seashells are on trend this season. Even the fashion world has taken notice this summer.

So fun predicting and catching jewellery trends. This seashell motif tells us a lot about the direction jewellery is heading in. Combining natural and organic materials with precious metals and rare gems is something you’ll see more and more, as it attempts to bring fine jewellery into the world of everyday, wearable jewellery.

I’ve found some amazing costume and contemporary jewellery with seashells at a few of my favourite online shops – Matchesfashion, Farfetch and Moda Operandi. Two designers in particular caught my attention, Rebecca De Ravenel and Tohum Design.

Tell me what you think about this seashell trend in the comments below. Did you see it coming? What seashell jewellery do you like the best?

Being in jewellery for over nine years, my tastes and cravings are rather exotic, but even I find myself succumbing to this seashell jewellery trend. So I channelled my five-year-old self and created a pair of statement earrings in Klein Blue from seashells I found in Cape Town. Just a little souvenir from my trip and something I can wear as a talisman. The heatwave in London has me in a summer mood and I’m ready for my DIY seashell earrings.

GEMOLOGUE DIY SEASHELL EARRINGS:

Shop my favourite  brands for seashell jewellery, or follow my lead and create one yourself!

You will need:
  1. Seashells (not too heavy or too big)
  2. H&M hoops
  3. Super glue
  4. Watercolour spray

STEPS

  1. Arrange the shells around your chosen hoops to envision how your earrings will look.
  2. One by one, glue the underside of the seashells to a thick hoop earring. Use a generous amount of glue to make sure the shells are secure.
  3. When the glue is dry, flip the earrings over to show the underside of the glued shells. Now glue another row of seashells on top of the first one.
  4. Once the glue is dry, spray a thin layer of watercolour paint in a colour of your choice. Leave to dry overnight.
  5. You’re ready to rock your statement earrings! Just remember to handle with care as shells are delicate.
