ART IN JEWELLERY: GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO BY MATTIOLI, VICENZAORO ITALY

At first the twinkle of colour and gorgeous array of gems will catch your eye when you glimpse these organic pieces from Mattioli. But look closer and you’ll discover the world of 16th Century Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo and his famous portraits made of fruits, vegetables, and flowers – good enough to eat!

When Arcimboldo was alive, Milan was teeming with artistic innovation and new art trends. One in particular, called Naturalism, was brought into favour by Leonardo da Vinci, and inspired Arcimboldo as a imperial court portrait artist. In celebration of his employer’s reign, he created two collections of works called The Four Seasons and The Elements using Naturalism to depict the organic nature of these compositions.

Jewellery designer Licia Mattioli has captured this fruitful venture in The Four Seasons collection that I found and fell in love with at the VICENZAORO International Jewellery Show.

The Mattioli-Arcimboldo miniatures came to life with two designs representing Summer and Autumn, each carefully and meticulously crafted from an intricate composition of rubies, sapphires, quartz, tourmalines, opals and amethysts, cut and set to mimic the fruits, flowers and vegetables of these Renaissance paintings. The result is nothing less than delightful and an superb example of skill and craftsmanship.

Just in time for the season of frost and snow, Mattioli has created Winter, this time in a different palette of sky, topaz, milky quartz, purple amethyst, iolite and moonstone to represent the chill of the season. The final creation just added to the jewellery collection is Spring in all her glory. Such a colourful way to celebrate your love of nature and jewellery combined. You know I love art and I’m always fascinated when I see the masters coming to life with sparkle and gemstones.

What’s your favourite collaboration of jewellery designer and artist? I would love to know, so leave me a comment below and we’ll chat!
