ART AS JEWELLERY: FROM CALDER TO KAPOOR BOOK REVIEW

You may remember me wearing a captivating mask by Man Ray – one of the leading avant-garde 20th century artists – at London Fashion Week. The topic of jewellery as art has fascinated me for years, so I was terribly excited to lay my hands on Louisa Guinness’ new book Art As Jewellery: From Calder to Kapoor. This gorgeous and very informative coffee table book is an extraordinary journey through artists’ enthralling jewellery pieces, and would be the perfect present for both jewellery and art lovers alike!

Art jewellery is very different to commercial jewellery: it is often handmade, unique or very limited and is usually gifted or sold through a gallery. Art jewellery has been produced for friendship and love rather than for financial gain. Many artists have a soft spot for the ladies and their jewellery creations were meant to please them and to show their affection. Louisa Guinness’ new book provides a fascinating insight into jewellery as an art form, exploring each artist – from Alexander Calder to Emily Young – in minute detail using a marvellous array of images, from archived photographs and sketches to modern day photographs.

Louisa Guinness art jewellery collection is fascinating – she owns many of the most important pieces in the history of the subject –  and some of the rings from her gallery feature on the cover of my upcoming book: GEMOLOGUE: Street Jewellery Styles & Styling Tips.

GEMOLOGUE by Liza Urla features exquisite global discoveries, trendy urban street style, exclusive interviews and rare jewellery reviews – a celebration of fine jewellery, fashion jewellery and vintage jewellery.
